Fresh local foods are now in season in Alberta and we are so excited here at Community Natural Foods. This is the time where food is fresh, tastes its best and is at the lowest price of the year. So when you are in store buying your crisp apples and gorgeous greens why not say hi to one of our Fresh Managers? This week we meet Vanessa who manages the café and all things fresh at our 10th Avenue location. She can be a woman of few words but has tremendous passion around fresh foods. Let find out more about Vanessa.
Our fresh managers have a substantial responsibility, not only do they look after our cafés, they also look after the grab and go items and the fresh produce that comes in daily. When asked what she enjoys about being the fresh manager Vanessa replied, “I love food and everything that goes along with that, being able to lead an amazing team, have fun and represent our farming community in the best way possible.” Despite being divided in many directions, Vanessa’s passion shines through when she talks about the staff, customers and farmers.
Vanessa has worked with us for just over a year now coming to Community from Model Milk. She is a pastry chef by trade, graduating from the SAIT Baking and Pastry Arts Program, here in Calgary. She doesn’t have a favorite food but states she is interested in trying new things will all kinds of foods. She feels like the luckiest girl in the world to have landed her job at Community. What she doesn’t realize is that CNF is so lucky to have her at the forefront of our flag ship location.
Vanessa does have one pet peeve though. People in Calgary have lost touch with seasonal foods so the misconception of the growing seasons of Alberta and Canada, as it relates to the local produce we are able to provide during the winter and spring months can we a bit frustrating. Calgarians are expecting to see certain foods all year but it just isn’t possible living in a northern climate. Educating people on seasonality is one of Community Natural Foods goals.
Of all the wonderful local farmers we work with, Vanessa has a special place in her heart for Rosemary of Poplar Bluff, she says, “Rosemary is such a fantastic woman and the knowledge and love for her product is outstanding!” Popular Bluff grows up to 16 different varieties of organic potatoes at any one time just east of Strathmore, Alberta. Rosemary is a leader in local produce.
