In 2015 Hop created Canada’s first inner city compost facility in Calgary with a second facility under construction in Vancouver. It is virtually an odor-free compost facility, in the city, that cuts the compost production time from 6 months to 10 days.
Kevin Davies, the founder of Hop, discovered the technology in New Zealand and brought it back to Canada. By tracking live data and optimizing the compost environment every 60 seconds Hop has created the highest nutrient organic compost in Canada. It takes 7.6 bags of standard compost to achieve the nutrients in 1 bag of Hop. You can purchase Hop Compost at Community Natural Foods.
Hop has saved just shy of 2 million pounds of waste from landfill
Compostable waste takes up about 40% of Calgary’s landfill space, which is expected to run out within 20 years. For every 1 pound of food in landfill, there are about 4 pounds of methane emissions, which is the equivalent of 100 pounds of CO2 emissions. In 2015, Hop diverted 2,088,267 pounds of food scraps from the landfill, transforming it into Hop Organic Craft Compost, to benefit local growers. Each generation of food supports the next.
