Conscious Living Tip for Sept. 20

Here are some ways to make your kids lunches healthier as well as your own. Replace ‘fruit bars’ with real fruit, exchange the chip, cookie, chocolate bar snack with whole grain or rice crackers, lower fat cheese and grapes – even a handful of nuts and dried fruit fare better, pack raw veggies like baby carrots, cucumber slices or celery and pepper sticks and replace any fruit beverage with water.

Conscious Living Tip for Sept. 19

Materials that are near baby on a daily basis should be organic whenever possible. This includes the surface on which the baby sleeps, baby clothes and baby carriers. If organic is cost-prohibitive, used items can be a good option to save money, as the chemicals that new conventional clothing is coated in have been washed away. There are many options for baby carriers on the market now and more organic options are appearing all the time.

Conscious Living Tip for Sept. 14

Most toys are made out of painted plastic, which gives off harmful fumes. Children are particularly vulnerable to exposure to these fumes because they sleep with their toys and put them in their mouths. Purchase toys made from minimally-processed renewable resources like unbleached organic cotton or even toys made from recycled materials. Help your kids play safely!

How to Have a Healthy School Year

It seems like we can still hear the year end school bell echoing when stores start promoting their “Back to School” sales. When it is time to head back, children are most able to meet all the challenges of a new school year, ranging from exam pressures to cold and flu season, when they have adequate nutrition to fuel their growing minds and bodies. Despite our ample food supply, children can fall short on many vital nutrients, potentially hindering their mental and/or physical ability to achieve success. The following table outlines some of the nutrients that are important to our children’s health and development.

Litterless Lunches: Starve Your Blue Cart and Save Some Money

It’s wonderful that Calgary now has a blue-cart recycling program, but let’s not forget that reducing waste is still the most important of the three Rs. Applying some common sense and imagination to the lunches we pack for ourselves and our children is one of the best ways we can cut back on home, school, and workplace throwaway trash. Considering that a “normal” child’s lunch generates about 30 kilograms of waste during the school year, there’s lots of room for improvement.

His latest venture has been to make movies about dinosaurs on his dad's cell phone and show them to his family. He charges them $3.00 to view his productions and then donates the money to The MUSTARD SEED. To see a RANDOM ACT like this, from a child, is pure joy.
Random Act of Community Nominee #2 - Stephanie Jackman

“Be the change you wish to see for the world,” once said Mahatma Gandhi, which is a quote that best describes Stephanie Jackman. Personally, Stephanie is a consumer committed to supporting a greener local economy by shopping local and supporting local businesses at every opportunity. A passionate leader, this mantra extended to Stephanie’s professional life when she founded REAP Business Association in 2006 with the vision to create a greener economy where citizens understand and value the impact of shopping locally, and businesses understand their role in creating a just and healthy world. REAP, which stands for Respect for the Earth and All People, officially launched in January, 2008 with three Founding Members and has since grown to include 27 Calgary businesses.
Because of her personal and professional choices, on a daily basis Stephanie impacts at least 21 people, generates 9 smiles, saves 2 kilowatt-hours of power, keeps 14.55 kg of CO2 out of our atmosphere,1 plastic bag from the landfill and simply makes Calgary a better place to live, work and prosper because of her Respect for the Earth and All People.

By late afternoon, the loonie slipped 1.7 per cent to 98.22 cents US. The fall came as the rating agency Standard & Poor's announced it had chopped the credit score of debt-plagued Greece to "junk bond" status.

Litterbugs

City officials are reminding Calgarians that getting caught littering can cost as much as $1,000.
As part of an awareness campaign launched Tuesday, bylaw officers began distrubuting bio-degradeable car litter bags and small bins for cigarette butts and gum.
Last year city council increased fines to $500 for littering, $750 for throwing garbage from a vehicle and $1,000 for tossing a burning cigarette out of a car window.
The hefty fines often catch offenders off guard, according to Bill Bruce, head of Calgary's bylaw services.
"Pure shock. In fact, I know myself and other officers, I've had somebody beside me do that in the car, and I'll roll my window down and say, 'you know that's a thousand dollar fine', and they generally get out of their car at a stop sign, pick that cigarette up and put it back inside their car."
There have been 85 brush fires in Calgary in recent years, and the biggest cause is carelessly discarded cigarettes, Bruce added.
The litter bags and cigarette bins are being handed out at Second Cup cafes Wednesday at 3192 Sunridge Blvd. N.E., from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and at 2803 17th Ave. S.W., from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Your Health. Your Choice. Your Right.

Health Canada has regulated Canada's NHP industry for many years. In 2004, it implemented new Natural Health Product Regulations. The intent of the NHP Regulations is to ensure Canadians have access and choice to a wide variety of high quality, safe and effective Natural Health Products - an objective the Natural Health Products industry heartily endorses.
Since the NHP Regulations were implemented, the industry has worked extremely hard to comply with over 38,000 product licence applications submitted to the Natural Health Product Directorate (NHPD) of Health Canada.
After five (5) years, just over 13,000 applications approved for a licence, almost 50% being refused or withdrawn, we are now reaching a breaking point.

Back to Vitamin D

For many centuries, people have worshipped the sun in ways ranging from austere religious rites to leisurely sunbathing. Interestingly, it seems to be the legacy of our time to assign our brightest light in the universe a dark reputation as a harmful entity. While the sun certainly can cause harm, humans have evolved to depend on the sun. Among the sun’s benefits is its ability to trigger our production of vitamin D upon contact with our skin.

Organic Foods – Good for You, Good for the Earth

We all have different reasons for choosing organic foods. Some of us choose our produce based on pesticide levels, aiming to decrease our exposure and that of our family. Some of us have found that organic foods taste better, or we believe that they are more nutritious. As Earth Day 2009 looms near, it’s important to remember one important reason to choose organic foods: their impact on the environ-ment can be much lower than that of conventionally grown foods.
